Cards

What you’ll get done

You'll add your cards, pick the right one in a couple of keystrokes when you log something, and see each card's spending by month.

Cards keeps track of which card paid for what. You add each business or credit card once, then pick it as the payment method when you log a purchase or an expense. The Cards page adds it all up.

MINT HQ never asks for a card number, an expiry date or a security code. A card here is just a name, a finish and, if you like, its limit and a monthly budget.

Add a card

Open Cards in the sidebar (on a phone it's in More) and choose Add a card.

  • Name: what you call it, such as Amex Business Gold. Two cards can't share a name, and a name can't be a card number.
  • Credit card or Debit card.
  • Finish: pick one of the 25 designs. It's only how the card looks in MINT HQ.
  • Credit limit (credit cards) and Monthly budget: both optional. Leave one empty for none.
Add a card: the card's name, its type and a finish, never its number.

Pick a card when you log something

In Log a purchase (under More details), Edit item and Bulk edit, the Payment method field lists your cards. Start typing and the best match is highlighted: a card's name, or its first letters (type "abg" for Amex Business Gold). Press Enter or click it to pick it. Type a card's full name and it's picked straight away. Press Escape to put back what was there.

  • Not a card is for cash, a PayPal balance or a gift card. On a purchase you can type anything else and keep it as the payment method, as before.
  • Add a card adds one without leaving the form, and picks it.
  • Your card at Nike last time: when you log a purchase at a store you've bought from before, the card you used there last time is picked for you. Change it if you paid another way.

On Expenses, the same picker is called Card used, in Add expense, Edit expense and Bulk edit. A subscription on a card stays on that card each time it renews. To move it to another card, change the card on its latest payment.

The Cards page

Your cards sit along the top, with what they spent this month. Click a card to see:

  • Spent this month, Since the day you added it (or its first purchase, if that's earlier), and its Limit or type.
  • Its monthly budget, if you set one, as a line that turns amber once you go past it.
  • Spent each month: the last five months, split into stock that sold, stock still in your inventory, and expenses. Under it, how much stock you bought on the card, how much of that has sold, and what it sold for.
  • What it paid for: every purchase and expense on the card, by month. Click one to open it where it is: in Inventory, Sales, Supplier Refunds or Expenses.

Stock you've sent back to the supplier doesn't count as still in your inventory. When the supplier's refund arrives, it comes off the card's spending for that month.

An item with no cost yet (from an import) isn't counted in any total, and the card says how many there are.

In your tables

Inventory's Payment method column and Expenses' Card used column show the card's mini design and its name. Click one to show only that card, then clear the filter to see everything again. Turn either column on or off in Columns.

When you export, each row carries its card's name. Importing an Expenses file with a card column puts each expense on the card with that name. MINT HQ never makes a card from an import.

Edit or remove a card

Use the pencil next to a card's name to change it. Remove card takes it off the page and out of the picker at once, with Undo for a few seconds. The purchases and expenses it paid for keep it. If you've given another card its name in the meantime, Undo offers Bring it back as… so you can bring it back under a new name.
